Ultrasound for Pets

pet ultrasound

Nippers Corner Pet Medical Center is proud to be one of the premier veterinary hospitals in Nashville, Tennessee, offering ultrasound services for cats and dogs. Ultrasound is a non-invasive and painless imaging technique that uses soundwaves to find abnormalities and diseases in internal organs. Ultrasound evaluations are used to examine abdominal organs including:

  • Liver

  • Spleen

  • Stomach

  • Intestines

  • Kidneys

  • Bladder

  • Uterus

  • Prostate Gland

  • Thyroid and parathyroid

Ultrasounds tests allow vets to detect changes in the shape, size, tissue, density, internal structure and position of organs. This evaluation can identify most abdominal masses or tumors, abnormal lymph nodes, as well as fluid within the abdominal cavity. Ultrasounds are also commonly used to check for pregnancy. Usually, our vets will recommend an ultrasound exam following blood work, physical exams, x-rays, and other primary diagnostic strategies.

Is An Ultrasound Painful for Pets?

The procedure is completely painless as it is non-invasive.

Will my Pet Need Sedation or Anesthesia for an Ultrasound?

Neither sedation or anesthesia is required for most pets. However, some dogs are resistant to lying on their backs and may need some sedation to allow the diagnostic procedure to be completed.
